Babs repacked everything into her bag as Drew went to the beach security hut and got their valuables. As they strolled hand-in-hand back toward the hotel, she said, “Why don’t you go and get your duffel bag from the Jeep? I can go on up and shower for dinner. It’ll take me longer to get ready, anyway.”

Nodding, he bent for a kiss and said, “I’ll be there in just a couple minutes.” Leering, he added, “If you go slow, we can share a shower.”

Rolling her eyes, they separated, and she watched as he headed toward the parking lot. Turning, she turned and hurried up to the room, determined to take a very fast shower. I’m going to have to get brave sometime and let him in. Sighing heavily, she thought of their perfect day. Just not right now.

Once inside the building, she bypassed the elevator, knowing she could jog up to the third floor easily. Walking down the hall to her room on the end, she dug out her room card, but as she placed it in the key slot, the door swung open.

Immediately alert, she cursed her lack of a weapon. Refusing to go in unarmed, she did not need to step inside the room to see that it had been trashed. Whirling around, she raced back to the staircase, powered through the door, and down the flights of steps. She reached the bottom just as Drew was coming into the lobby.

His eyes were on her, his smile wide, but before she had a chance to say anything, his expression instantly went on guard.

“What’s wrong?” he bit out, his eyes searching over her as though looking to see if she were injured.

“Someone’s been in my room. It looks trashed, but I didn’t go in,” she reported, her words rushed.

“Fuck!” he cursed. He began stalking toward the stairs, saying, “You stay here.”

Jerking, she said, “You’re fuckin’ kidding me, right? You expect me to stay here?” She fast-walked to keep up with his long stride, following as he took the steps double-time, even carrying his duffel.

She raced after him but halted, slamming into him when he threw his arm out to the side as they approached her door. He placed his duffel on the hall floor, unzipped the side pocket, and withdrew a gun. She stayed behind him, out of his way, as he swiftly moved into her room, his weapon held ready. Giving him a moment, she knew he needed to assure that there was no one hiding in the room.

He appeared in the doorway, his face set in granite, and said, “Come in, babe. Get your stuff and get packed.”

His words did not register as she stepped inside and looked at the mess. The hotel furniture, including the mattress, had not been touched. But her clothes were strewn all about, her toiletry case dumped onto the floor, and all of the drawers had been pulled open.

She stomped over to the telephone, ready to call the front desk when he stopped her.
